I started this uncanny tradition 3 years ago. Two weeks after my first child was born, I picked up all of my Playstation 2 and Xbox games on a whim. Notfying my wife of the possibility of another addition to the family, my diabolical plan was formed. Trade in everything I could to purchase an Xbox 360. The 60 gigabyte pro was $399.99 at the time and all of my friends,(Sam, Scott, and Allen) all ponied up the big dollars already. Gamestop offered me a paltry $200 dollars for a PS3 slim, roughly 10 PS2 games, an Original Xbox, and 6-10 Xbox games. Ok, I know I got ripped off, but I was happy to walk out of the store with a brand new XBox 360 and no games! I was just glad to be in the now, and all of those cool graphics that I heard about could now be experienced on my 27 inch Daewoo T.V. Oh yeah, since my TV was standard def, I didn’t really get to experience those Hi-Def crisp graphics, that the box mentioned. But at least I had a 360 and could do cool 360 things like Xbox Live revamped.
Now, it has been 3 years since that impulse purchase and i have reached that eclipse again. Being a new parent causes many emotional responses. It’s truly a life changing experience, and I won’t begin to embark on explaining the joys and pitfalls of parenthood. But, I must pose a question to the community. I just had my second child a few days ago, and it’s time to keep the tradition going and purchase another system. The PS3 price drop has my impulse trigger finger tingling, and I spent the past week convincing the wife why I must buy one. Walking through Gamestop a few days ago and contemplating my inevitable Playstation 3 purchase, scheming Alfred took over. Thumbing through games, adding up costs, I had an epiphany; do I really want a Playstation 3. There were only a few games that look interesting, which I couldn’t get on the 360. Scary thought. here’s my thought process;
*I’m at the point where I can buy a PS3 after waiting for years.
*It would be great to have a different perspective for the show.
* A Blu – Ray player is nice, but not mandatory, but cool
* Home sounds interesting, Having a Batcave sounds cool. In a geek sort of way.
*Unchartered 2, Warhawk, Killzone 2, Socom - ok, Socom is stretching it.
Don’t know if this justifies $220+ Dollars, but I keep telling myself that this will add depth to the show.
I kept walking through the store and saw the Wii setup in the corner. Wii sports resort was loaded up on the Demo Unit. Well, maybe I can play a round of frisbee Golf and try out the Wii Motion Plus Accessory. 1 hour later I have to unglue myself away from it. Maybe 50+ million people knew secretly how fun the Wii is and I was extremely late to the party. So, now I want a Wii, and here’s my reasoning
*Wii Motion Plus is very accurate, and Tiger Woods 2009(Wii) might be awesome with the accessory.
*Games drop in Price faster than other games, and the library is deep.
* Legend of Zelda:TP, MadWorld, Resident Evil Exclusives, Punchout, Animal Crossing….Mario
*Wife and Kids will Love it.
Okay, so there’s my reasoning. What are your reasons why you would prefer one over the other?

i too was ploting the purchase of a ps3 and then something clicked while at wal-mart and now i’m going to buy a wii just for the fact that there are more games on the wii atm then on ps3 that i’d like to pick up. 245 is cheaper then 299 also.
As a PS3 and a 360 owner I have to admit that although I love the PS3, it loses a great deal of it’s value along side a 360. The reason for this is that the 360 and the PS3 both share nearly identical libraries I’m willing to bet that if there’s a new cross-platform game coming out that you’re interested in, you’ll be more likely to purchase it for the 360, especially if it has a multi-player component. Given that you’re going to have to decide which console you want based on what 1st party titles you like best.
I’d say both consoles have an equal number of titles that a mature gamer can appreciate at this point. But long term it seems that the PS3 is -finally- picking up steam while the Wii is starting to lose momentum. Sure, Mario Galaxy is a spectacular title, and the Wii Ware store has a MASSIVE supply of retro content. But there really aren’t many exciting titles being announced. (Mad World was embarrassingly immature by the way. No adult with children should play that game.)
Sony on the other hand has got big things ahead of them with their 1-1 aspect motion control software and a library that’s starting to look look up as the Dev-tools are finally getting polished to be easily used. Plus. you’ll get to play Final Fantasy XIII without the low rez textures that the 360 is getting. Infamous was a great game. And Uncharted 2 looks amazing.
I totally agree with you about Madworld. I don’t see how IGN gave that a 9 but No More Heroes a 7.9. Those scores should be reversed. Madworld got dull very quickly while No More Heroes had me enthralled all the way until the end. I can’t wait for No More Heroes 2 next year!
Since I own both, I’ll give you my 2 cents on the situation. I think you should get the Wii, not because I’m a Wii fan (which I am) but because having the PS3 and 360 doesn’t make much sense unless you just feel the need to play EVERYTHING.
First off, let’s use 2 of your co-hosts as an example why you shouldn’t get a PS3. Sam and Allen both have PS3s and rarely play them. Why? My guess is, it’s because they can get 95% of the same games on the PS3. Sure, not getting a PS3 would mean you’d miss out on MGS4, God of War III, Uncharted 1 & 2, Fat Princess, as well as some other games, but games like Madden, Call of Duty, Dead Space, Fallout 3, Rock Band/Guitar Hero, etc. are on both consoles and I’m sure you’re gonna get the 360 version because that’s the system all your friends will be playing on. So if you think you should get a PS3 because you’ll play it more then the Wii, I beg to differ. I think you’ll actually play it less then the Wii because most of the games you’ll get will also be on the 360 thus, there’s no need to even cut the PS3 on except to watch movies. I gotta say though, as good as movies look in Blu-Ray, I much prefer streaming them. Once Netflix finally gets around to offering that premium package where you can forgo the DVDs entirely and have the entire catalog available to stream, you’ll see that it’s a far superior way to watch movies.
Now, this is why you should get the Wii instead. Almost every Wii game you is gonna be a vastly different experience then the other consoles. Games like GH and RB don’t count because they play exactly the same across all consoles and therefore up for criticism. I’m talking about games like Trauma Center, Endless Ocean 2, Super Paper Mario, Excitebots, My 2009 Wii game of the year so far: , one of my ABSOLUTE favorite Wii games: No More Heroes, and of course, the awesomeness that is Super Mario Galaxy. That’s stuff you’ll never find anywhere else and are excellent games despite not being in HD. I always tell people, you PLAY games, not WATCH them. I’m not saying that graphics aren’t important but when you’re playing a fun game, the importance of graphics subsides and you just come to accept the look for what it is.
I’ll put it like this. If you own a car and wanted a second car to accompany it, would you buy another that was very similar or a car that offered something different? If you have a Camry and an Altima, you’re probably gonna pick as your favorite and just drive that all the time. If you had a Camry and a Go Kart, each one brings something unique to the table and could compliment each other.
So that’s my 2 cents. I’m sure we’ll here about your decision soon enough.

My expierience is that my wife will play the Wii. She likes Mario and both Wii Sports. She will play that more then Xbox. Plus my 7 yr old will play it. Gets the family together to game.
If you can afford it, buy it. The PS3 is easily the best console this generation. I have two 360′s, two PS3′s and a Wii in my house. My wife and I are both gamers. The PS3 is easily my favorite system. I was actually disappointed to hear all the GHR guys bought Madden for the 360. I wanted in on the league but U had to go with the PS3 version. Personally I think Madden has always been synonymous with the Playstation brand. Madden just feels right with a PlayStation controller. With that said the PS3 has built-in wireless, bluray, free online, rechargebale controller out of the box, great games and, oh yeah, IT HASN”T BROKEN ON ME! I’m on my fifth 360.
If you can swing it Mav, it’s a no brainer.
I would have to float my boat with Twigg. The PS3 is the best console this gen–hands down. I’m not including online features; I’m talking console specifics and quality of build here. I would encourage you to break out of the “I can get it on Xbox” thinking if you’re going to get the system. For me, fighting games, action games, and RPGs are better experiences on the PS3 simply due to the controller. I hated playing the Devil May Cry 4 demo on the 360. Using those LB and RB buttons for anything more than an item select is annoying, and for me made the game almost unplayable.
I’ll get a Wii when Team Ninja’s Metroid game comes out. But in my opinion the PS3 is worth the purchase.
I couldn’t disagree more with most of the posters here. You can’t ignore the online features and that is what makes the 360 the best. I like going into parties and busting on my friends. I like having a ton of people online to hop into games with. I like having people in my games have Mic’s.
PS3 is better made. It will last longer. It can probably do better graphics. But it does worse graphics because it’s harder to program for and the 360 is the console of choice. It has a few good games but mostly it’s 360 games with a worse framerate. I’m hopeful. I’m looking forward to Uncharted 2 and GoW3…but even then, I have to turn on the PS3 and leave the Xbox behind and like I said in a previous post, I had a chance to play Infamous all day but chose Batman instead. Infamous is probably better but I was hanging with some people in a party and decided to stick around.
Wii = good. There’s some fun there. If it was my only system I would play it more. Now I haven’t turned it on for months. Wii Bowling is hella fun. It lasts a long time. So does Smash Brothers and Super Mario Sunshine…after that you hit a big drought. BIG. Zelda felt forced to me and last generation (which it was). The other stuff just isn’t that thrilling. My son loves the stupid Carnival Games and the like but at age 6 he stopped playing the Wii and just plays the 360 with me.
I see you’re not familiar with the Wii library. Super Mario Sunshine is a Gamecube game. Super Mario Galaxy is the Wii game. There also isn’t a BIG dropoff in quality games. Play some of those games I posted earlier and you’ll see that there are more quality Wii games then you think. I can rattle off another 10 if need be.
You’re SUCH a Nintendo fanboy… It sickens me.
Kidding =P
LOL! My wife says I should sell my Wii because I’ve been playing nothing but NCAA Football 10 since it came out in July.
QT I was a Nintendo fanboy. I gave my N64 with The New Tetris (best tetris game ever) to my X (may it fall on her head). I ran out and sang the praises of Luigi’s Mansion when everyone else was ripping it. I still have a press pass I received when the GameCube rented out a spot on South Street and I convinced IGN to let me cover it for them. I went out at lunch to pre-order my Wii. I snuck out of work early to get the Wii. I loved Nintendo…now, not so much.
I made my 100 Mii’s or downloaded them from the site. I played the heck out of Wii Bowling. I got all goooshy when Smash Brothers Brawl and Mario Kart came out. And there are a lot of very good games on the Wii. I will name them in a minute…but my point is just that the very good games on the Wii aren’t as good as the very good games on the 360 (IMHO). And the community that has evolved around the 360 and their parties and their standard microphones makes it the system for me.
If you’re getting a Wii here’s my short list of must-haves:
Super Mario Galaxy(!), Super Smash Brothers Brawl, Mario Kart, WiiPlay (ends up being a spare controller with an OK $10 game), Zack and Wiki make a porno…wait, it’s just Zak and Wiki, Super Paper Mario and No More Heroes.
I like Trauma Center for the DS but not so much on the Wii.
I own all three systems. My 360 is my primary gaming machine. Anything cross-platform game that I get is for the 360. The Wii was bought mainly for the wife and kid, but after a brief period (30 days), they got bored with it so it just collects dust. I had fun with it, but I can’t play it for long before my wrists start hurting. I kept putting off getting a PS3 until it had some decent exclusive games for it. But before a game came out that I had to have, my mother-in-law got it for me for Christmas. Now it is mostly used as our blu-ray player, except on the rare occasion I pull out Little Big Planet. The 360 by far is my favorite system. I enjoy the dashboard, the community, the NetFlix, oh, and the games. I love hearing that little ding everytime I unlock an achievement.
When it comes down to it, it’s a personal choice which system you select. You are goingto be the one playing it, after all. So pick the one you think you’ll have the most fun on.
