One More Reason I Think Microsoft Sucks!

Actually this would fit more under the category of why I think Sony is awesome but I had to say something creative. Something I never realized was that Sony uses standard 2.5″ laptop hard drives. I can buy a 360GB hard drive for $139 for my PS3 while Microsoft wants $149 for their 120GB drive. And swapping out your PS3 drive does not “brick” all the games you have downloaded. Sony even provides you with a backup tool in the system!

What really goes against Microsoft here is that they also use a standard SATA 2.5″ drive but they put it in a proprietary format so that you had to buy their hardware. Why couldn’t they have been a little nicer and let us swap hard drives our own self? I don’t mind the Plastic casing, but at least give me an easy way of swapping drives. Enough of my Microsoft bashing today. I’ll get back to playing games on my 360 I guess.

Have any of you upgraded your PS3 hard drive? If so, let us know how it went and if it is as easy as it seems. Also if you have hacked your 360 with a bigger drive let me know. If you purchased the 120GB 360 hard drive…. I’m sorry but you got ripped off.

    I love microsoft!

According to Major Nelson, you can just re-download your xbox DLC and it will reset the licenses. I wouldn’t know, never had a problem with my xbox. *knocks on wood*

And yes, the replacement HDDs seem a tad expensive.

I’m sorry JD. I stopped paying attention at “according to Major Nelson”. I’m joking. You can still play your 360 arcade games and stuff but you just have to play while online. You can’t play offline. I think there is a work around but it can take up to 30 days to take effect I’ve heard. I’m with you on the lack of xbox problems though. I’m still on my launch console but I think I’m going to have to replace the disc drive soon. It’s been having some problems lately.

i’m on my 2nd console and i think the whole 360 hard drive thing is dumb i heard steve519 mention once that the old 360′s you could hook an external hard drive up and use but i dunno if he was beig serious or not i know my buddy bob has a 360 and an external and he tryed and all it would do is read his mp3′s he had on it

When I got my Elite, it took m$ FOREVER to get me the “hard drive transfer kit” so I could move my old 20GB over to the shiny new (and much larger) 120GB. Since doing that, a lot of my Arcade games are suffering from what I like to call Live Amnesia. They are back to “demo” status. And unfortunately since this thing is not smart enough to see that I have Achievements for the games and you can’t get those in demos. What I am waiting for from them is a Blu Ray drive that I can replace myself. Anyway, that’s my rant.

I agree completely that the Xbox 360 HDDs are overpriced, however, I am glad that Microsoft has such a tight reign on what they allow to be put in their system. If they didn’t, we’d have many more problems with modders (read: Halo 2 days on the Original Xbox) than the virtually negligible issues that we have now. We’ll have to wait and see if this issue causes Sony more harm than good IF they every get their online system up and running.

I agree partly with you on the modding part but I don’t think that having user swappable hard drives would make a difference. I disagree however because, if they wanted to, they could still load the same mods onto the current hard drive. Making the hard drive easier to change does not in turn make it easier to mod in my opinion. Granted, I don’t know that much about modding so I can’t say for sure.

Good point; I have heard that some games (Halo 3, and probably COD4) have detection built into Xbox Live to see if people are using Mods, but I guess the lack of HDD swapping (in Microsoft’s mind) is just another layer of protection against that. Swapping a hard drive would be a nice feature to have in the future. I mean, Live is ran over PCs in the form of Games for Windows, and you don’t have to have a certain type of PC, or even a certain Hard Drive for that to work properly, so hopefully they’ll work on that aspect of the console.

Allen. As much money as you have given Microsoft, you should be able to write if off on your taxes. Anyways, Major Nelson is laughing all the way to the bank$$$$$

JD’s post is correct about redownloading your content to your new hard drive. They explain how to do it in a Xbox 101 segment on the show. Seems really quick and painless. Can’t recall the show number right now. I will look it up and post it when i find it. With that being said, SHOUT OUT! SHOUT OUT!, I do get tired of microsoft continually milking my wallet.

    @ JD and RandumGamer

I recently tried this with my Marvel Ultimate Alliance DLC and it didn’t work. I still cannot play my extra characters I bought unless I’m connected to LIVE. Makes daddy sad :(

I still need to try my arcade games I downloaded to my original 360. I’ll report back of my findings.
