A short preamble to either GOTY or FlopOTY – Dead Island

September 1st, 2011

Dead Island had everyone’s attention since their amazing cinematic trailer that came out of the blue and stunned us with it’s reverse girl zombie family story. After an announcement stated that such event would not actually occur in the game, claims arose to whether the game would actually be decent.

A different Dead Island slowly emerged from the chunks of gameplay released every now and then until a full picture of how the game would actually play came alive (20 mins of gameplay). An open world zombie game of epic proportions, consciously or unconsciously combining elements from successful games like Fallout, Left 4 Dead and Dead Rising and making something unique, huge and (hopefully) a lot of fun.

Necromorph Invasion Imminent

January 16th, 2011

In 2010 EA kicked off the year by releasing  Mass Effect 2, which was a game of the year contender.  Game companies feared releasing games in the winter, and EA dispelled the myth. Following the tradition, EA will release another AAA title in the winter. Dead Space 2 is on the horizon and expectations are high.  Isaac Clarke returns to impossible odds from fighting the Necromorphs on the USG Ishimura. How he survived the first game is nightmare inducing, but the story continues. The game begins with Isaac in an mental asylum dealing with his dead girlfriend hallucinations. Suprise, another outbreak occurs and it’s up to our plasma-cutter-of-the-year heroine to save the day again. He may be fighting more than Necromorphs.

Valve Announces New Mode in Left 4 Dead 2

Chainsaw. Rawr.

Valve, developers of such awesomeness as Half Life 2, Portal, Counter Strike and Left 4 Dead – recently announced the newest gameplay mode for the upcoming Left 4 Dead 2.  Scavenge mode pits survivors vs. infected in a race to collect (hence the name, ‘Scavenge’) gas cans and dump them into a generator located in each map.  The more gas the survivors dump, the more points you get.  The infecteds job is – you guessed it – to stop the collection of said gas cans.  Switch sides, rinse and repeat.  Most points wins the round.

The new mode should be shorter than the typical versus mode in the current L4D.  This, and the addition of female boomers, makes L4D2 a must buy for me.  That and the fact that I’ve played every Valve game ever produced.  Check out Giant Bomb for more info.

Chris Redfield, I repent!

I played the demo of Resident Evil 5 and hated it. Having to be a statue while shooting felt fine in Resident Evil IV but now it feels very dated. We have Gears of War and Call of Duty and most importantly, Dead Space. All of them feel better, more fluid. Resident Evil 5 throws cement on your feet. Even the walking and running aspects of the game feel poorly done.

With all that being said, I rented the game so I could play with a friend (Jdsblackbox). I figured I’d get an hour or two in and the poor controls would make me throw in something fun. I was wrong. This game is great. Your inventory carries over from game to game so you can go and replay the earlier levels to collect ammo and the like and even when I’m grinding it out for ammo, I enjoy it. Right now I’m at work typing about it and wishing I was home killing zombies.

It’s a flawed game. The controls could be better. But it’s very fun. So if you’re like me and hated the controls, it’s still worth giving it a shot.

Resident Evil Bash (Stroudburg PA Best Buy Only)

On March 13th, the Stroudburg, PA Best Buy will be making a haunted house. Originally they had planned to have a few workers dress up as zombies. This transformed slowly. They added some mad scientists who were ‘working’ on the zombie virus. Then the idea of the haunted house came to them. Then they went to the local recruiting station to ask for some fatigues. The recruiting station one-upped them and offered soldiers complete with M-16′s firing blanks.

Sounds like it’s turning into quite a party. I work 15 minutes from there so I’m thinking about stopping by. The only downside is that I hated the demo and didn’t want to buy the game…

Resident Evil Degeneration – The Review

January 18th, 2009
By: Alfred "GHR Maverick"

Hordes of flesh eating Zombies…Check. B-Rated voice acting….Check. Impossible survival odds….Check. The T-Virus makes another appearance in an effort to turn the human race into mindless flesh eating Zombies. Our two favorite sexually tense male/female Zombie eradicating duo, Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield team up for another adventure together in Resident Evil:Degeneration.

Last we saw these heroines was in RE2. Leon and Claire were the last survivors in Raccoon City, due to an outbreak of the G-Virus(a modified T-Virus) that turns humans into the walking dead. Following their survival of Raccoon City, Leon worked for a government organization secretly investigating Umbrella(the company that manufactured the Virus), and Claire joined with a rogue group trying to stop Umbrella. Thus our story begins.

The T-Virus has hit the black market and a terrorists organization has obtained a sample of the virus and threatens to spread it if certain demands aren’t met. In comes the Zombie-wiki -knowing, perennial cool-guy Leon S. Kennedy, sporting his Resident Evil 4 makeover. Complete with leather bomber jacket and male model hairstyle, Leon is ready to take on hordes of the walking dead accompanied by a Desert Eagle and a few clips. Side Note – This is the war hardened Leon from RE4 and not the Rookie Cop Leon from RE2. The movie unfolds similar to the games, which will please Resident Evil fans. The plot is easy to follow for first time watchers, and is intriguing enough to encourage a Wikipedia search afterward. Noticeably absent is a cheesy love story. Oddly, love stories are synonymous with horror movies and survival horror games. There are hints of attraction, but the lack of affection holds the movie on it’s roller coaster track and keeps the excitement steady.

For the Zombie lover, this is a great addition to your collection in preparation for the Zombie-pocalypse. For the casual observer, this is a must add on the Netflix queue.

Call of Duty: World at War Nazi Zombie Mode!

October 29th, 2008
By: JDsBlackBox

Nazi zombies! Castle Wolfenstein revisited! Videosift is showing footage of the bonus mode in Call of Duty 5, accessible when you beat the single player campaign. Much like ‘horde mode’ in the new Gears of War, waves of baddies come at you as you try and shoot them. This game just went to a must buy for me!

Players also earn money in this mode to upgrade weapons and to buy barricades, similar to Counter Strike.

-Rumor Mill- Is Capcom dipping in the Resident Evil 4 pot again?

April 4th, 2008

Just when you think that Resdent Evil 4 is done making it’s rounds on each system, it’s being rumored that there might be another version being released on the Xbox360/PS3. Last week it was posted in the forums of ‘ the horror is alive ‘ website, that the poster was sent the box art by a friend that worked for Capcom. The Game will add Hunk, a hidden charater in RE2, along with Ada Wong and Leon Kennedy. Hunk’s missions will be similar to Ada Wong’s side story in the original Resident Evil 4. The timing of this seems to be a bit peculiar, due to the rumor surfacing around April Fool’s day. Keep your ears open to see if Capcom says anything about this rumored title.
