The Walking Dead isn’t a game, but a test of our humanity

A horde of Walkers(Zombies) are closing in. Her last seconds of humanity flee with each piercing scream. She backs up, prolonging the inevitable. Lee Everett is presumably standing a few hundred yards away, but is armed with a high powered rifle. A choice has to be made; shoot the screaming lady, and grant her a quick death instead of a slow excruciating one in the mouths of walkers, or let her screams divert the Horde so you and Kenny can raid the drug store, to provide the group with much needed medicine.

Neither choice is desirable, but one is mandatory. The Walking Dead has changed the formula on games that allow players to choose their own path. In many ways this change is welcome and necessary. As the story progresses over four chapters, many of the choices will make you cringe before making a decision, and forces you to abide by that decision. Sometimes multiple people need help and the wrong choice can be fatal. Death is so common that it should be included in the credits. Choosing a person’s fate isn’t always apparent, and becoming emotionally attached should be forewarned against on the cover.

Social Network Games : My Secret Shame

February 2nd, 2010

My wife recently got Facebook and saw all of her friends sending her invites to Mafia Wars and Farmville and Blood Wars and a ton of other games. She signed up and asked me to show her what it was. I happily explained everything and she said, “So you just hit this button over and over.” “Yeah, basically. Sometimes you hit that button too.” After my 7 year old and her made fun of me and I realized that I didn’t understand why I liked these games. I play them and I guess I enjoy it, but I don’t know why. There’s no skill. No story. There is a sense of accomplishment to completing some things and I guess that is enough because I still log in and hit that button. I’ve become George Jetson.

Farmville is my other secret shame. It’s on my iPhone and religiously I plant and hoe and plant and hoe and plant and hoe. So while I have to tell you that Farmville is one of my favorite iPhone games. I can’t tell you why. It’s free until you get suckered into buying all the additional content. I already purchased a medium sized farm for $1. And the ‘drag to plow’ for $1. And the ‘drag to seed’ for $1. And the ‘drag to plant’ for $1. And right now I am trying my best not to buy the large farm for another $1. This ‘free’ iPhone game is going to be my most expensive iPhone purchase at the end. And I love it, I just don’t know why.

Stay Tuned!

Some may argue that this isn’t necessarily gaming related, but I say it is, so there. It is June 5th and E3 has come and gone for this year. However, the hot news isn’t over yet! Monday starts the Apple WWDC (World Wide Developer’s Conference), which is Apple’s own little version of E3. Of course, the biggest expected announcement is that of a new 3rd generation iPhone. I love Apple and I love my iPhone, but seriously….do they need to come out with a new model every year? I am the proud owner of a 1st gen iPhone, which I use extensivly for gaming….I mean productivity. Last year’s iPhone was a nice announcement, but the carrot wasn’t tasty enough to get me to bite. This year could be different. I am interested to see what new gaming innovations will be unveiled, if any. My thought is that if Apple has no new gaming innovations for the iPhone, then they are not trying to make it a serious competitor in the handheld gaming market. On the other hand, if they come out with a forward facing video camera as rumored, that could introduce a new dimension in iPhone to iPhone gaming. More to come next week!

Meta Gear Solid coming to the iPhone

According to Konami, a Metal Gear Solid game will be coming to the iPhone platform this spring. I am a little skpetical, but from looking at the trailer it might be worth at least a look. A lot of it will come down to the price point for me personally. The forst 12 levels of the game are slated to be released sometime this spring with 8 more levels to come as free upgrades at a later time. With recent games like Sim City, Super Monkey Ball, and now MGS, the iPhone/iPod Touch is starting to establish itself as a legitimate portable gaming platform. Only time will tell.

LED Football 2 has just been released for the iPhone. I remember going on break while working at the mall to go buy an LED John Elway Football. Then spending the rest of the night competing with my manager. Sometimes I miss working retail…This version of LED Football will have passing, punts and field goals. Run over to iTunes and download yourself a copy!
