E3: Perfect Dark Announced for XBLA

June 2nd, 2009
By: ShoNuff71

More good retro goodness coming from E3 today. 1Up.com has reported via Major Nelson’s twitter that Rare’s classic Perfect Dark was coming to Xbox LIVE this winter.

Perfect Dark was my favorite game on N64 back in the day. I’m happy to see it coming to LIVE. I just wish Rare could re-create the same gaming magic they had back in the day for this generation.

(E3): Microsoft Launching Games On Demand

June 1st, 2009
By: ShoNuff71

This in from 1UP.com–Microsoft will soon be launching a retail game download service called Games on Demand this coming August. This announcement wasn’t part of their E3 presentation, instead it came at luncheon following their keynote.

While no games were specifically mentioned, the service is supposed to launch with around 50 games. The Games on Demand demo shown featured Assassin’s Creed, Mass Effect, and BioShock. You will be able to use either MS spacebucks, or credit cards to buy games from the service, and prices are supposed to be comperable to brick and mortar stores.

The handwritting on the wall is becomming more and more profound heralding the end of the Axis of Evil otherwise known as Gamestop. First it was Burnout Paradise on PSN, now this. I hope Sony gets a service like this soon too, as it will hopefully force GameStop to be more competitive in their trade-in / used game values. My only concern is drive space. While a PS3′s hard drive is easily (and cheaply) upgraded, the Xbox 360′s hard drive is anything but reasonably priced. In fact, it’s highway robbery. Hopefully, M$ will give us a break on that all important peice sometime soon.

Mike Tyson Punches his way onto XBL

Do you rember when Mike Tyson knocked that guy out in 14 seconds.(Just in Case you Forgot) Time froze as Tyson swung at opponents, because one punch could end their career, if not their life. Children of the 80′s remember this pre ear-bitting, societal maniacal Tyson. Watching him enter the ring in those Black trunks complete with matching black shoes could quiet a room. This man was just refferred to as “Iron Mike”

In Fight Night Round 4, we finally can live our “Iron Mike” fantasies of the 80′s. We now have the ability to chose the most polarizing fighter ever to step in the ring as we dreamed of years ago. FNR4 offers a host of fighters spanning generations, including; Lennox Lewis, Muhammad, Ali George Foreman(pre-twinkies), and Floyd Mayweather Jr. The graphics engine is designed from the ground up and the visuals are stunning. The engine allows for real-time face phsyics. If a fighter is repeatedly attacked in one spot on his face, then his face will represent where the punches are thrown. Technique is heavily implemented in FNR4. If the fighter is effective from a distance in reality, then their in-game counterpart is effective as a range fighter. The same rule applies to close range fighters. This game is shaping up to be a top-notch contended in 2009. To get an early look at the game download it on XBL.

Bionic Commando Rearmed: $5.00 or 400 Space Bucks

Just in case you’ve been in a corner the past year, there is some news that will make you pony up those Microsoft Space Bucks. Bionic Commando:Rearmed, the classic re-make, had a %50 price drop on the PSN. XBLA followed suite with a price drop from 800 to 400 Space Bucks. That price is cheap enough for an impulse buy. Rearmed features Red headed, Nazi hunting protagonist, Nathan “RAD” Spencer and his Bionic Arm. NES purists consider to be one their favorite games of all time, and the remake is an Omage to the “old school.” The swinging mechaninc is vastly improved over it’s NES counterpart, and capcom also throws in some new moves which makes the game more enjoyable. If you’re looking for an challenging game that is worth a $59.99 price tag, then suit up, soldier!

For any geezer gamers out there like me, Amazon has a nice deal on some classic coin-op arcade games for XBLA. They’re only $2.96 each. Titles included are: Gauntlet, Galaga, Joust, Dig Dug, Paperboy, Ms. Pacman, Golden Axe, and TMNT (1989). I’m about to get nostalgic. Titles can be purchased here. Enjoy!

TMNT: Turtles In Time Coming to XBLA

May 2nd, 2009
By: ShoNuff71

TMNT: Turtles in Time was shown in it’s alpha stage during Galabunga in New York City. The game is part of the TMNT Road Tour Van, which is a celebration of all things TMNT related to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the IP. Gamerbytes reported on the game via info pulled from the Ninja Pizza blog (a TMNT fansite) with a few details about the playable alpha build. It’s described as a “re-make with 3D graphics”, and the code seems to be based off the arcade version, and not the SNES version, which had an additional boss, and level. The game is currently slated for release on XBLA, and possibly a Wii version. There was no info on who was actually bringing the game out, release date, or any other details. I would expect more info to be released by E3, or the San Diego ComicCon.

More Marvel vs Capcom News–Awww Yeeeah!!!

April 27th, 2009

Gamestooge.com is reporting that the XBL and PSN versions of Marvel vs Capcom 2 has been officially announced. The best news, is that this game is not simply a port (which would have been absolutely fine in my book) but the game will be getting the HD treatment similar to what Capcom did for Street Fighter Turbo. That means sharp graphics, and widescreen support. Also, don’t worry about having to play through the single player repeatedly to unlock all of the characters like you had to do for the Dreamcast version. This time around, all 56 characters will be ready to duke it out online from the jump. While an official release date wasn’t given, we are supposed to get a demo on April 30th. This is going to be fantastic. I am LOVING this fighting game revival.

Ghetto Golf–You’ve Got to be Kidding…

April 21st, 2009
By: ShoNuff71

Maybe its me–maybe I’m the one with the problem. I admit I’m an old man, and I just don’t get a whole lot of this media designed to appeal to an “urban demographic”, and when I hear about projects like this, my concern and confusion only grows.

Criousgamer reported on the project in question called Ghetto Golf coded by a company called Illfonic out of Denver, Colorado. You play the part of Vonte, trying to make a name for himself in the world of golf by making impossible shots on a “golf course” in the middle of his Oakland neighborhood by using his assortment of spiked, and exploding golf balls, and his handy machine gun to get passed various urban themed obstacles. Hey, who hasn’t brought their “gat” to get the attention of the PGA–thats how Tiger did it, right?

I had to do a little more digging into this, and I found out that one of the founders of Illfonic is a man named Raphael Saadiq. Fans of 80s R&B may know him better as Charlie Wiggins–one of the members of Tony! Toni! Tone’!. Okay, thats cool. So I checked out Illfonic’s website. There, I found a section tagged as “Upcoming Sh*t”, where I found this statement. Quote: “Ghetto Golf is an upcoming downloadable multi platform title. We would like to tell and show you more and will as soon as we get our legal sh*t straight.” Wow, that statement is so urban, and so cool–Dolemite himself must have said it….

Look, as a black man and gamer, I’m pleased to see African-American representation in the gaming industry. We need a lot more of it. But can’t we see a higher level of professionalism here? Is that asking too much? Do we think for a minute that Capcom, would use that kind of language on their own site to describe an upcoming project for the world to see? Will Infinity Ward’s CEO take the stage at E3, and say “This Modern Warfare 2 is gonna be the sh*t, yo!” I think not.

I wonder if the Resident Evil 5 protest brigade will complain about this one as Vonte lands Birdies by banking shots off the passed out crackhead…

Leaked Achievements for Marvel vs Capcom 2?

April 17th, 2009
By: ShoNuff71

TheGamingVault.com is reporting that an Acheivement list has popped up on an unofficial XBL site called Xbox360Achievements.org revealing the list of achievements for the XBL version of Marvel vs Capcom 2. Some of the listed achievements on the site include winning 50 ranked matches, landing a 100 hit combo in multiplayer, and defeat an opponent in under 15 seconds.

I have the Dreamcast version of the game, but I’ll be first in the virtual line to download this version. Its a blast to play. My guess is that Capcom will officially announce the game at E3. I can’t wait. Now, if Capcom would do an HD remix version of Final Fight….
