A short preamble to either GOTY or FlopOTY – Dead Island

September 1st, 2011
By: warmanator

Dead Island had everyone’s attention since their amazing cinematic trailer that came out of the blue and stunned us with it’s reverse girl zombie family story. After an announcement stated that such event would not actually occur in the game, claims arose to whether the game would actually be decent.

A different Dead Island slowly emerged from the chunks of gameplay released every now and then until a full picture of how the game would actually play came alive (20 mins of gameplay). An open world zombie game of epic proportions, consciously or unconsciously combining elements from successful games like Fallout, Left 4 Dead and Dead Rising and making something unique, huge and (hopefully) a lot of fun.

LA Noire – A Different Perspective on a Decent Game

May 26th, 2011
By: warmanator

Well, its been a month and a bit since Portal 2 came out, so I was ready to be wowed again by the second game to drop on my most anticipated list for 2011. Firstly I forgive Rockstar for releasing the game in Australia two days after the US even though it was developed in Sydney, cos I’m just a nice guy, but as I sit here listening to the free Portal 2 soundtrack, it’s kinda apparent that LA Noire didn’t have much of an impact on me. It might be because I’m too dumb, I thought the game was well made, but nothing special. In this article I will go through the negatives I experienced in the game, if people think I’m hating on it then don’t, I’m just going through what I found was wrong. Correct me on it if you want, write your own fanboy article if you want, be my guest.

Portal 2 – Grab yourselves a Potato

April 19th, 2011
By: warmanator

Well everyone, Portal 2 was released early for everyone, after a lengthy and slightly unrewarding ARG campaign that all hardcore Valve fans would have had an ear on for a while. Portal 2 is of course the sequel to the Valve tech demo Portal, which ended up being massively successful, and rightly so, it was an ingenious blend of FPS (Except you never shoot a bullet or kill anyone) and puzzles topped off with an immersing story that keeps you on your toes until the very end.

I must say, if you are one of those ten or so people who didn’t like Portal then this isn’t the article for you because, ladies and gentlemen, Portal 2 is definitely worth the hype. I played on the PS3 and have completed the single player campaign that took me 8 or so hours, this article will not spoil any twists or important information that you will come across during the game.

Medieval-style games, why I choose not to partake

April 18th, 2011
By: warmanator

Hello all you GamerHusbands, GamerWives and GamerSingles, it’s been a while. Portal 2 releases in a few days and God help me if you think I’m not gunna put my two-cents worth into a review of that. This article isn’t about puzzle games though, it’s about games like Elder Scrolls, Dragon Age and any other Magic Realism interpretations of medieval times.

I tried ladies and gentlemen, seriously I did, but I just can’t get in the mood for it.

PixelJunk Shooter 2 (My honest opinion – not for the faint hearted)

March 6th, 2011
By: warmanator

Q-Games brought out their latest PixelJunk game in the week just past, PixelJunk Shooter 2. I really liked the first PixelJunk Shooter and I regard it as the best downloadable game I’ve played. So it’d make sense that I was really looking forward to this sequel ever since it was announced. Right now after finishing the single player campaign, I’m not so sure.

Warmanator’s top picks of 2011

February 24th, 2011
By: warmanator

Thought I might share my 2011 (or as I like to call it ‘year of the games I really want’) list I want to place in my permanent ‘care’ this year, share a bit of my fanboy love of serieses (or is it serii?) and brand new innovations that really caught my eye.

Quick note: Some of these are PS3 exclusive, but the majority will please everyone

The week before Stacking

February 4th, 2011
By: warmanator

Some of you may be looking forward to playing Dead Space 2, some may be cuteing it up in Little Big Planet 2, some might be looking for some thrills in the Killzone 3 Beta, but me? I’m looking forward to next week’s release of the Double Fine downloadable game Stacking, a stealth/class based action adventure about a Russian Doll trying to rescue his family.
If you weren’t keeping tabs, this is the second of four planned downloadable games from Double Fine that was to be the alternative to a sequel to Brutal Legend, which I thought was a good game but didn’t definitely need a sequel. This series of new games has sated my need for Tim Schafer’s quirky comedy games while also putting a different designer at the helm of each of the four games to be released. I’ve been a fan of downloadable games since I got my PS3 and realised the online games were soo cheap. Right up my alley.

Now, this post is obviously not a review of Stacking, since it isn’t out yet, so what could you possibly read in this post? How about my opinion of the first of the four games (Costume Quest), and maybe chuck in a bit of a glimpse DeathSpank 1 & 2? Ok then, you’ve got yourself a deal!

Take a Nuka-Break Beyond Black Mesa – Fan films in review

January 25th, 2011
By: warmanator

I thought since I study film, and these are two newly released game fan films, I’d chuck my two cents worth into a comparison/review of them.
The films in question are Fallout: Nuka-Break uploaded on January 24th and Beyond Black Mesa (Half-Life) uploaded on January 21st. (No spoilers will be dished out, so you can read without ruining the endings)

To start off, the idea of a fan film of your two favorite video games was an exciting idea for me, but I was prepared to be disappointed. I probably would have been sad if they were hollywood translations of these two games that, in my opinion, blazed the trail for post-apocalyptic storytelling. So luckily it was pure enthusiasm that fueled the two small groups of independent filmmakers that made these two films, not money and target audiences.

Now, if you think this means I wasn’t disappointed and had the best time of my life, that is not entirely true.

Monkey Island – a journey exploring faithful HD remakes and episodic style DL games

January 24th, 2011
By: warmanator

Firstly, hi! This is my first post on GHR, I’m still learning how to write gaming reviews, so I hope you find it a little interesting

During last year on the PSN (and other systems/see below), the classic point-and-click adventure game The Secret of Monkey Island was born again as a HD remake. I wasn’t born when it was first out, so this release was great for me. I played them as if it was a new game. Of course going online to work out solutions that stumped me isn’t the best idea of fun for most people (although try and tell me you didn’t when going for 100% on Arkham Asylum once or twice). The creators of Monkey Island, Ron Gilbert (DeathSpank & HotHead designer), Tim Schafer (Double Fine creator) and Dave Grossman (Telltale designer) made Monkey Island and other games like Manic Mansion which was the first computer game I had ever played. They were employed by LucasArts when they used to make good games that weren’t star wars related. Monkey Island indirectly gave birth to many games that I consider at the front of the ‘comedy’ video game genre
