We come back for another week with a Thursday episode. These episodes are always challenging, because we have to be careful with our words. So, what we say is what you hear which can make for some funny lines. We have a good conversation about LA Noire. Sam is a critical gamer so the LA Noire hype doesn’t cloud his early opinion on the game. Alfred has a hard time containing his excitement on the new Alan Wake rumor. He is just happy to have more Alan Wake. Scott is still catching up on games that you might have missed, so our games of the week is a well rounded selection. We also discuss a Blogpost from Jeff Green( former host of GFW live and 1up editor) that discusses the transition from playing most games for free as an industry professional, to being a civilian and the hard decision of spending $60 per game. This was a fun show and we keep the jokes rolling, and also cover a lot of bases! Enjoy!

The GamerHusbands are back to form this week with one of our funniest shows. Alfred also does a little ranting on used game sales and how there are more ways to support the industry than exclusively buying new games.(love ya Lefty) What will the Microsoft purchase of Skype mean for podcasters? Will Skype now have achievements? How much is hype pushing the interest in LA Noire? Lots of good conversation on this episode, and we are glad to be back recording together again. Minus Allen. As mentioned in episode 98, the 32 Video Game Tournament from the list of 2009 Game Releases can now be voted on in the forums here. As a kid the things I looked forward to the most on the weekends were Saturday morning cartoons and looking at the comics in the Sunday paper. As an adult I rarely get up early enough for cartoons anymore but do wake up just in time for College Football. I do not even bother getting a newspaper for any reason now. Thanks to Al Gore and the beautiful Interwebs, I pick and choose what I want to read on and be entertained by. With slow days at work I am forced to fill the gaps of boredom with internet surfing though most the oceans tend to be blocked. One area that has not been blocked is the web comic area. So I thought I would share some web comic sites that I have enjoyed and perhaps you can let me know which ones you think I should venture into to add to my surfing library. So let us begin:

Web Comics based on video gaming:

When I first discovered comics on video games the ones I originally discovered were Penny Arcade and Ctrl+Alt+Del. Unfortunately I have veered away from these for different reasons. With PA, though I do still check from time to time, for the most part I just do not find humor much in these strips. CAD is similar but is even more disinteresting to me because of the link in story of the characters that I just honestly do not care to invest time in knowing anymore.

One Web Comic that I do keep up with is Fanboys. This comic does not seem to be updating on a regular basis anymore which is unfortunate. Once I discovered this site I spent the rest of the afternoon reading from the beginning all the way to the current comic strip at the time. In order to get some of the ‘inside jokes’ in more recent strips you have to go back to see the development of the story. Worth a look.

This next one is quite well known but I have enjoyed it so now up, VG Cats. It has been another good time waster and contains a good variety of comics, though I enjoy the ones in the archive the most.  Also, there is no need to catch up on story development other than just wanting to unless you delve into the other comic series they have on the site.

The ‘rookie’ of the bunch I discovered recently while I was at the Platform Nation forums. I saw a link that Jonny_Tango put in the shout box announcing the latest comic strip he had done was now on his site. Reading through all the comics at Game Rant Comics one work morning was a humorous endeavor. Shortly after reading all the strips on the site it was blocked by my work’s firewall but I intend to keep up with it on my own time.

Web Comics not based on video gaming:

My favorite Web Comic is Amazing Super Powers. The humor is right up my alley and another cool feature is the bonus comic strip that can be found by moving the pointer over off the right top corner of the comic strip. Plus if you move the pointer over the strip it has a funny alt tag line that pops up. Another comic strip that you do not have to keep up with a story line but it will add to the humor to go back to previous strips and catch up.

If you consider yourself a bit of a geek or all out dork then xkcd may be enjoyable for you. Described on the site as ‘a web comic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language’ it definitely is a comic that takes a keen sense of geekiness to ‘get’ sometimes. Even more impressive is the stick figure art style that still draws a huge following.

 Last on my list is a bit of a hit or miss for me at times. Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal (SMBC) is a popular web comic that for the most part I find funny. Definitely worth a look at especially if you are bored.

Mainly I wanted to post this article to not only let others know about some good web comics that they may not have known about and to also find out from you which ones not listed do you enjoy and think I should check out. Even if you already know about all the ones I have listed, I value any ‘gems’ you know of that will get me through the dry work days.

We have all heard the stories before: Woman sues McDonalds for burning herself with hot coffee, Robber wins lawsuit about cop shooting him, woman wins lawsuit for breaking her tailbone from slipping on her spilt drink in a restaurant, and the list goes on and on. Well now this has carried over into the Video Game Characters’ Community.

Goomba #17 has become an advocate to his fellow shroomies

It all started with the landmark lawsuit win of Goomba #17. For those that do not remember an unprecedented trial of Goomba #17 vs. Mario (of Super Mario Bros fame), in which the plaintiff sued Mario for “Physical and Mental Anguish”, ended with the Plaintiff winning the case in the form of 2.5 million gold coins to compensate for damages. In interviewing G#17, he stated, “This is a huge win for mushroom equality and hopefully this changes the flippant attitude of violence inflicted on all video game characters.” G#17 has since gone on to become the most successful mushroom in history with his best-selling autobiography, screen plays, and college lecture tours. The incident in question that gave birth to a trial in the first place occurred within world 1-2 in Super Mario Bros the game. G#17 claims while he was “pacing back and forth thinking about the meaning of life” when an Italian plumber violently jumped on top of him and flattened his muffin top and broke his neck. “Come to find out, I was really lucky. I lost friends to this menace to society by way of fireballs.  FIREBALLS!?! Who does that? One thing a mushroom never wants to be is fried” stated G#17. G#17 also revealed that because of this incident he lost his job with Mr. Bowser his boss and faced ridicule at the hands of his peers. When asked about the claim of Mario’s legal team that “All the mushrooms on every stage meant malicious harm”, G#17 responded, “That is an ill advised racist claim. I consider myself a pacifist and hate being lumped in with all the malicious mushrooms out there.”

Because of the great financial losses in Mario’s life, he had to sign an eternal contract to Nintendo of America, Inc to pay his debts. His brother Luigi adds, “It’s a really sad to see. He planned to be retired by now but never will happen. My brother he a lost his greatest love…the Princess Toadstool. She is so embarrassed that she change her last name to Peach. But Mario knows and keeps searching for her but she hides from castle to castle.”

This landmark lawsuit win marked the beginning of a mass of lawsuit wins to come. Each court case with the Plaintiffs winning and their winning amounts below (does not include cases settles out of court):

* Bob the guard vs. Solid Snake :: “Unprovoked Tranquillized Attack against the Plaintiff” Win $700,000

* Citizens of Liberty City vs. Niko Bellic :: “Reckless Endangerment and Damages” Win $1 MIL per citizen

* Lipton Tea Company vs. Master Chief :: “Defamation of the name ’Teabags’ resulting in Financial Loss” Win $3 MIL

* Union of Ghosts vs. Pacman :: “Mental Anguish and Terrorizing” Win 100,000 Pellets

A video game hate crime?

These are just a few of the many cases to come forth from the Goomba #17 case which has started off a “snowball effect” as far as lawsuits go. When will all the trigger happy lawsuits come to an end? Not anytime soon. It was recently discovered that Jack Thompson has been working with the Coalition of Zombies for Equality to work on a lawsuit against many current video game characters. When asked why this suit has not been brought into court yet Thompson responded, “It’s appalling that such violence can happen to these undead, obviously influenced by these Grand Theft Auto types. We’ve hit a brick wall in getting a case because I’ve had a difficult time conveying to my clients since communication between us is not easily understood. But I promise, these atrocious acts will come to trial.”

So next time you get a Nazi in your scope, feel like crashing into another car in Burnout, roll your Katamari blindly over school children, or make Link kick a chicken you may want to hesitate a moment and consider that your actions just could get another video game character in legal trouble.

Stay frosty gamers…just not too frosty.

Cancer. Just by reading the word I’m sure you can think of someone that has touched your life in some way that has battled with or currently is battling with this disease. It does not care who you are, your age, or where you are at in life. But you can be a part to help against this viscious killer. Last year we had the awesome opportunity to partner with Extra Life, a charity event started by Sarcastic Gamer in conjunction with the Texas Children’s Hospital to help provide funding for children with cancer. Last year we along with many other communities raised over $120,000! Now it’s that time again where we can be a part of a great cause to continue the fight on these kid’s and their families’ behalves.

On October 17th, the GHR Extra Life Team will join with Sarcastic Gamer and many more communities again by staying up for 24 hours straight playing Video Games.

Last week Harmonix announced 15 more songs to the already 10 previously known songs for The Beatles Rockband. This makes 25 out of the 45 songs that have now been revealed. So after seeing the list I realized that there are many songs from the list that I really didn’t know. Out of curiosity I spent time Youtube’n some of them to find out what they were.
