October 14th, 2010
By: ShoNuff71

Its better late than never. Next week, On October 19th, Playstation3 owners will be able to access their NetFlix instant watch queues sans disc. GameStooge.com had the video demo of the upcoming app posted on Playstationblog.com.

The app is pretty slick in appearance. You can make adjustments to your queue through the app, and according to narrator, the app is based on PS3 code, so you can use the app with your DualShock. For those like me who use the PS3 as the primary media source, its good to see.

As a dyed-in-the-wool Amazon fan, KMart is really making some moves for this gamer’s money. Although, they should be giving Quantum Theory away just to get rid of it.

If you’re like me, any deals you can get on your most anticipated titles for the fall are most welcome. Kmart seems to really want to be a player when it comes to the gaming deals. Kmartgamer’s blog is packed with some nice October deals on games a lot of people will be wanting to get:

Star Wars: Force Unleashed II–Buy in-store between Oct. 26th and Oct. 30th and get a $20 gaming coupon.

Zombies Invading Red Dead Redemption

October 2nd, 2010
By: ShoNuff71

Well, we knew it had to happen sooner or later. Zombies are coming to the Red Dead Redemption universe via DLC to the PSN and LIVE online services. GameTrailers.com has some gameplay hype for your viewing pleasure.

Personally, I think the whole “zombie” thing is getting a little long in the tooth. However, the idea of fighting the undead in an old west setting the caliber of Red Dead’s is interesting. No clues as to whether this is a side mission, or a separate chapter from the main game, but the trailer ends with a zombified grizzly. Gotta love that. Since I have to re-play the game on PS3 since my Xbox crapped out, I might have to pick this up.

My Not-so-Fond Farewell to Micro$oft’s Xbox360

September 20th, 2010
By: ShoNuff71

Just as fair warning–this is a rant against Microsoft’s Xbox360. Now, on to my rage.

Well, good ‘ol Microsoft has struck me again. Xbox360 #4 has officially gone on to the digital great beyond. Cause of death–E68; or as many more commonly refer to it–Red Ring. I picked up Halo Reach on a bargain at Toys R Us ($49 with a trade in, plus a $20 gift card). This evening I decide to try out what the critics have been jonesing over, and my Xbox says “Nope. Not working today. I’m dead.” Maybe it was mad because the last game I played on it was Sega’s Golden Axe: Beast Rider. Maybe that’s what killed it.

Sony’s Schematics for PS2 Backwards Compatibility Device Revealed

September 14th, 2010
By: ShoNuff71

Siliconera has posted schematics submitted by Sony to the Japanese Patent Office that details a device that will allow Playstation 2 games to run on Playstation 3. According to Siliconera who translated the documents, the device–if released to market as described–will be a single unit device consisting of the following:

▪ Processor
▪ DVD decoder/emulator
▪ Sound processor
▪ Graphics processor

I highly suggest you read Gamespot.com’s reporting on Siliconera’s article for additional info of the proposed device. Now, I’m no electronics engineer by any stretch of the imagination, nor am I a gaming industry expert–but allow me to play industry pro for a second:

This device kind of sounds like a Playstation 2 minus the DVD drive, power brick, and memory card ports. I think this device might possibly be a final skew of the Playstation 2 before the console is finally put out to pasture. PS2 sales according to August NPDs were under 105K (which is still kind of impressive when you take into consideration how long the system has been in production), and there really isn’t much coming out for it as we move into the Christmas shopping season. It could be a good way to send that tech out on a high note, satisfy the Sony hardcore who have been clamoring for a long time for PS2 functionality to return to PS3–and, in my case–without having to re-purchase my favorite games via digital download (*cough* Nintendo *cough).

I’d love to be able to play my copies of Godhand, and Viewtiful Joe on PS3, but I can’t help but ask the question–Why did Sony cut PS2 computability out of the PS3 in the first place?

Tag-Team Gameplay of Mortal Kombat 9 Shown at PAX ’10

September 7th, 2010
By: ShoNuff71

Hans Lo, the Senior Producer for Mortal Kombat 9 was on hand at PAX showcasing the tag-team mode of the game. GameTrailers.com has the feed. Based off the gameplay video, the tag aspects are somewhat similar to other games like Capcom’s VS series where you can swap team members out, or bring in a team member to assist with a special attack to continue a combo. Speaking of combos, Hans makes a point during his narrative to note that the “dial a combo” combat is gone in this game, which is a good thing. Those who played MK vs DC Universe know what I’m talking about.

I was never a fan of the MK games. The only one I ever really liked was Shaolin Monks–a well done MK themed brawler that came out on the PS2 and original Xbox. MK9 does have me intrigued, and I do hope the gameplay is as good as it looks.

Arc System Works Working on Arcana Heart 3

September 1st, 2010
By: ShoNuff71

Ah, yeah. More news that sets my old school 2D fighting heart a flutter. This news is kinda old, and I’m probably the only person in this community who cares about this game–let alone heard of the series of games. But, ‘yall know me. If it’s 2D, fighting, or a combination of the two, I’ve gotta mention it here.

Transforming 360 Controller: More Than Meets The Eye

September 1st, 2010
By: ShoNuff71

Scott’s favorite corporate spokesperson showcased via video the upcoming “transforming” Xbox360 controller. Basically, the digital pad can be twisted from “disc” formation to a “cross” formation–that is much more in line of what the DualShock 3′s digital pad is. There are a few other ergonomic enhancements made to the triggers, and the ABXY buttons are in shades of gray as well. So, what does this mean for those who shell out the $64.99 to get this controller (it only comes bundled with the Charge and Play Kit) when it launches November 9th? Well–if nothing else you’ll be able to control your character in Metal Slug XX a little better. Hopefully better control in 2D games will result from this change.

Actually, modders have been doing the same thing to the Xbox360 controller for some time now–albeit a little less sophisticated. Hopefully 2D control will improve (which is the main reason I buy my 2D games on PS3 whenever possible). Now all they need to do is put the Decepticon logo in place of the guide button.
