Playstation Plus Firmware Update 3.40 to Launch June 29

June 17th, 2010
By: ShoNuff71

Playstation Plus–the premium edition of PSN briefly talked on during Sony’s press conference–will supposedly be coming online with firmware update 3.40. According to an exerpt from a Sony press release posted on VG247.com, the download will be available on June 29. Those interested in Playstation Plus can only purchase it through the Playstation 3 at this point. No additional info was given beyond what was discussed at Sony’s presser with regard to Plus’ feature set. We can only speculate whether the long rumored cross-game chat will be offered.

With this announcement, I’m a little concerned. If Plus’ official launch is at the end of this month, it should have commanded a lot more time during Sony’s presser than just the vague descriptions and prices offered toward the end of the event. Hopefully we’re not looking at a Home launch situation, and PS Plus will be ready for prime time when it’s launched. It would be nice if Plus could be a viable alternative to Xbox LIVE–especially for those whose only system (or primary system) is the Playstation 3.

From E3: Gameplay of Platinum Game’s Vanquish

June 16th, 2010

In light of all the big budget games hogging all the publicity at E3, I thought it might be interesting to put a spotlight (albeit a small one) on games that look top tier, but may not be on your radar. One of these titles is Vanquish–published by Sega and created by Platinum Games.

GHR Review: Split / Second

June 3rd, 2010
By: ShoNuff71

Split / Second is one of the few games I couldn’t wait to get my hands on. I watched all the trailers, the developer diaries and interviews, and video previews I could set my eyeballs upon in anxious anticipation of this game’s release. Now that its out, and I’ve sunk considerable time into it, I have to say–it has been worth the wait. What Disney and Black Rock Studios have created is–if not the best arcade racer to date–definately the most fun.

Announced: Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds

April 21st, 2010
By: ShoNuff71

I’ve said it before, and thank goodness I can say it again…Its good to be a fighting game fan right now. Between Super Street Fighter IV by the end of this month, to BlazBlue: Continuum Shift dropping in July, I don’t think I could be happier with the state of my favorite gaming genre.

Until now…

Today, at Capcom’s Captivate 2010 event, first info was announced on Marvel vs Capcom 3. Not many details were revealed with the flashy, good looking trailer. Old faves like Wolverine, Morrigan, Iron Man, and Hulk return, and it seems like the Berretta weilding, thorn in Umbrella’s side Chris Redfield will be joining the fray.

In interviews and write ups posted on IGN.com, the game will be powered by Capcom’s proprietary MT Framework engine, which is already pulling graphical duty in Resident Evil 5, and the upcoming Lost Planet 2. The game will not be a DLC title, but instead will be disc based game. Every aspect of the Vs series is being re-worked for this game; from balancing and graphics, to the music and storyline.

Storyline?! Yup, you read right. Apparently, Capcom is trying to piece together some sort of story for MvC3, complete with end boss and character specific endings. Of course, no details were given, but I don’t think anybody is expecting a Mass Effect guaged story for this…Its all about the fighting.

Release date is tentatively announced as “Spring of 2011″. Hyper combos will be back. No final number of characters was listed (although current level is supposed to be around 30), but already blogs are buzzing that Dante from Devil May Cry is a definate, but who knows.

Hopefully more info will be announced at E3 regarding this PS3/Xbox360 title, but I’m definately on the hype train for this one. Check out IGN.com for the trailer, interviews, and writeup. [Image from IGN.com]

Review: God of War 3

April 3rd, 2010

Epic. Its an adjective that has been as over-used in game reviews as red exploding barrels in first person shooters. Unfortunately, my vocabulary isn’t expansive enough to pick a word other than “epic” after playing to completion Sony’s God of War 3. From a visual perspective, this game is the latest title in the PS3′s exclusive arsenal that says, “Nope. Can’t do this on 360.” (Not being a fanboy by saying that folks…Its the truth) Gameplay is a challenging roller-coaster ride of adrenalin–literally from beginning to end…However, it was this trilogy’s end that made my jaw hit the floor, and utter, “WTF WAS THAT?!” Don’t worry. There are no spoilers in this review.

Review: Aliens vs Predator

March 19th, 2010

At what point does style surpass substance? Can a great aesthetic make amends for faulty mechanics? Well–maybe Toyota owners would be best to answer those questions in general (just kidding–I’ve got a Prius). After playing Aliens vs Predator, I had to ask these questions, and my answers are a little different from the other opinions about the game you may have heard.

“Oil Up!” Final Character in Super Street Fighter IV Roster Revealed at GDC

March 14th, 2010
By: ShoNuff71

The final member of the SSF IV roster was revealed during GDC. He’s a Turkish Oil Wrestler named Hakan. Appearance wise, he looks like the result of an illicit rendezvous between Final Fight’s Haggar, Hellboy, Zangief, and Akuma. Like Abel, and Zangief his main strength are his up close grapple moves, however, when he douses his body with olive oil (extra virgin olive oil, to be exact) his move set is augmented with distance attacks, projectile counters, and increased grab range with his grapple attacks. His special moves have a zany attribute to them, and his Super move looks downright disturbing–in a good way…Sorta. Gamespot has an excellent video spotlight hands on preview with Capcom’s Seth Killian at GDC.

Now that we have a clear picture of what SSF IV will offer–i.e. character roster and fantastic online components like spectator mode, and tournament, I finally realized what it was about the original Street Fighter IV that left me so dissappointed. The new characters simply weren’t all that interesting to me. Sure jumping online as Ryu, Chun Li or Ken is great, but everyone plays as them. Now, I can’t wait to check out how Dudly, Adon, and Ibuki have changed to adapt to SSF IV’s combat system, and I can’t wait to “oil up” with Hakan. EEEEwwwwwwww…That didn’t sound right, did it?
