Arc System Works Working on Arcana Heart 3

Ah, yeah. More news that sets my old school 2D fighting heart a flutter. This news is kinda old, and I’m probably the only person in this community who cares about this game–let alone heard of the series of games. But, ‘yall know me. If it’s 2D, fighting, or a combination of the two, I’ve gotta mention it here.

Transforming 360 Controller: More Than Meets The Eye

September 1st, 2010
By: ShoNuff71

Scott’s favorite corporate spokesperson showcased via video the upcoming “transforming” Xbox360 controller. Basically, the digital pad can be twisted from “disc” formation to a “cross” formation–that is much more in line of what the DualShock 3′s digital pad is. There are a few other ergonomic enhancements made to the triggers, and the ABXY buttons are in shades of gray as well. So, what does this mean for those who shell out the $64.99 to get this controller (it only comes bundled with the Charge and Play Kit) when it launches November 9th? Well–if nothing else you’ll be able to control your character in Metal Slug XX a little better. Hopefully better control in 2D games will result from this change.

Actually, modders have been doing the same thing to the Xbox360 controller for some time now–albeit a little less sophisticated. Hopefully 2D control will improve (which is the main reason I buy my 2D games on PS3 whenever possible). Now all they need to do is put the Decepticon logo in place of the guide button.

THQ Ticked Off Over Used Game Buyers

August 25th, 2010
By: ShoNuff71

“The Man” sticks it to us again with no Vaseline. GameStooge.com has a good editorial on how THQ doesn’t take too kindly to us gamers buying their games on the rebound. They’re pulling a page from EA’s playbook beginning with SmackDown vs Raw 2011. Every new copy of the game will include a single use code that will unlock “key elements” of the game such as online play.

This is my spin on the subject. I have the solution to developers like THQ, EA and others who say the used game market is pulling food from the mouths of their corporate shareholders. MAKE BETTER GAMES. When I open the cabinet where my games are stored, I see titles in my library that will NEVER be traded in. The God of War series, Ninja Gaiden, Heavenly Sword, GTA: San Andreas, and a few others are titles that I will continue to play repeatedly because they are so good. I purchased these games on day one because they hit so many of the high points that are on my genres of choice checklist.

I think just about every gamer out there has a game or games in their library that they’d almost rather loose a finger than put it on the GameStop trading block. If publishers want to put a dent in the used games market, make games that we wouldn’t want to part with. I don’t need every game to re-invent the wheel. I just want the genres that I love to evolve those elements that draw me to those types of games in the first place.

Developers like THQ need to step their game up, (pun intended) and stop blaming the gaming public because we aren’t willing to pay new car prices for last year’s models.

Crysis 2 Multiplayer Shown at Gamescom

One game shooter fans may want to keep an eye on in the midst of your Halos, KillZones, and Call of Duties might by Crytek's Crysis 2. GameStooge has footage posted from Crytek’s multiplayer demonstration from Gamescon.

Based on the button prompts that pop up on the screen, this is the Xbox 360 version. It is graphically impressive–not quite Killzone 3 impressive, but very, very sharp none the less.

There will be multiple modes, and what I would guess as a perks like system associated with the Tek-suits in the game. It looks like FPS fans will want to keep an eye on this one.

Viewtiful Joe Gameplay Showcased in MvsC3 at Gamescom

GameStooge has some very exciting footage of Capcom’s Marvel vs Capcom 3 that was shown at Gamescom. This time, its Viewtiful Joe taking center stage with the beat-down; he’s a returning character from Tatsunoku vs Capcom.

I really enjoyed all of Capcom’s Vs series of games–even though I was never really good at them. The more I see of MvsC3, the more my hype meter goes up. This game just may have my #1 spot for games of 2011.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold Gameplay Preview

GameTrailers has a gameplay preview up of WB Interactive Entertainment’s Batman: The Brave and the Bold for Wii. The game seems to look and play like one of my favorite games for SNES–Konami’s The Adventures of Batman & Robin.

Graphics looked like they’ve been ripped from the cartoon itself. Whether you’re playing co-op or single player, there will always be two players on screen battling the villains. Only Batman and Robin were shown as playable characters, but you have the option to call on a number of supporting cast characters from the B:BaB TV show for screen clearing attacks.

This could be one to look out for–since Arkam City is still a ways away.

New Gameplay Elements and Powers Shown for InFamous 2

Sucker Punch showcased some of Cole’s new powers and gameplay elements to IGN today at Gamescom.

In IGN’s write up, they mention a new power called Kinetic Pulse, which is basically the electrical version of StarKiller’s Force Grab/Push powers. Also, a new gameplay element was revealed–environmental destruction. It seems Cole’s powers will have a greater effect on the environment than the previous game. Towers, columns, and possibly other structures will fall when you let loose with Cole’s powers.

This sounds great. Sucker Punch could really make some serious strides in the “moral choice” side of the game. I can imagine story and side missions where–regardless of the good or bad decision you make, reckless use of your powers could cause the opposite intent of your actions. For example: You take on a mission to protect a housing structure from attack, but you inadvertently damage the building, or hurt inhabitants you were trying to protect by not using your powers effectively. There are some very cool aspects of the “moral choice” gameplay element that could be really pushed if Sucker Punch pursues it like I hope they do. This is a D1C for me regardless, but I’m hoping Sucker Punch takes it that much further.

Namco/Bandai Shows New Screens of Dragon Ball Z: Raging Blast 2

NamcoBandai released some additional screenshots of Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2 at the Gamescom convention in Cologne, Germany. GameSpot has several of the images up on their site, with links to gameplay videos.

Graphically, it looks slightly better than the previous outing–which isn’t surprising. My concern is the gameplay. Hopefully, they pull a few pages from the Tenkaichi Dragon Ball series of games. While I found the combat a little more complex than it needed to be, it was spot on. I found the first Raging Blast seriously lacking in comparison through oversimplification, that drained most of the fun from the game.

Hopefully NamcoBandai will find the gameplay sweet spot that made Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm so much fun. This series deserves it.

True To The Game

The last couple of months have been pretty busy. I’ve moved, and have been given new responsibilities at my job. To top that off, my wife was recently injured in an accident. Needless to say, finding time to play games have been difficult, if not outright impossible. When I did get some time to play recently, I played some downloadable titles that are modern reminders of why I love this hobby.

Hard Corps: Uprising

June 28th, 2010
By: ShoNuff71

Siliconera did a hands-on with Konami’s Hard Corps: Uprising, a DLC game coming to PSN and Xbox LIVE. Contra faithful may recall Contra: Hard Corps on the Sega Genesis, from which this game gets it’s name.

Like the original, you will have multiple characters to choose from. In Siliconera’s write up, only two characters were available, but according to other sources I found on the game, rumor is that there will be at least 3 DLC characters. New to the series are two new gameplay features: You get a health bar for your character. This time around, it takes 3 hits to put your character down for the count. Secondly, you have the ability to reflect shots back at enemies using a rechargeable skill.

Probably most importantly, Konami hired Arc Systems Works (the company responsible for the 2-D heaven known as BlazBlue) to code the game. That means hand drawn HD anime style brilliant graphics and colors, with a frame rate that will be second to none. I’m loving these few but quality throwbacks to old school gameplay. Konami will definately be getting my money on day one.
