First, let me apologize up front if I’m crossing any boundaries set by this site’s owners and moderators. Writing for GHR is a privilege that I take seriously–especially with regard to content allowed on this community blog. This blog post is religious in nature, with regard to me and a game I had been playing. My intent is to simply share an experience that occurred to me tonight–nothing more. With this in mind, I invite you to click the jump.

Xbox Final Fantasy XIII Bundle Coming to US
February 12th, 2010By: ShoNuff71
A lot of game release announcements were made at Microsoft’s X10 event yesterday, (1Up has all the info lined up on their face page) but the “shocker” of sorts was the announcement of the Final Fantasy XIII 360 bundle for North America.
In 1Up’s update write-up of the announcement, here’s what you’re going to get for your $400 bucks (okay, $399.99):
2 wireless controllers
250 gig HD with the Final Fantasy logo etched in
Standard edition of the game
“Exclusive” avatar items
Now, I’m no RPG fan, but I do understand 2 things about this franchise: 1) What a heavy hitter this game is worldwide, and 2) For many years, Final Fantasy titles have been synonomous with Playstation hardware. Much like GTA 3 was an influencing factor for me to get a PS2, those that remember Square’s Final Fantasy games on Nintendo made the jump to the Playstation brand to continue to enjoy a series of games that have gone on to become legendary as industry standard setters in the RPG genre.
I’m no industry insider, but this Microsoft “coup-de-bundle” is the JRPG equivalent of hearing that there will be a Gears of War 3 bundle for Playstation. Not every gamer has jumped onboard for this gen, and I would guess that more than just a few are waiting for Final Fantasy XIII before jumping in. I have no idea what back room deals went down between Square/Enix and Microsoft to get this done, but Microsoft may have stolen Sony’s lunch money when it comes to the future of this franchise. I think it is a mistake for Sony not to bring out a bundle to the US–particularly the Lightning Edition. I would be absolutely shocked if the NPDs following FFXIII’s release reveal that more copies were sold on Xbox than Playstation. Again, time will tell.
Game Industry Wives Against Rockstar San Diego
January 12th, 2010By: ShoNuff71

In an article posted by ShackNews, unnamed wives are claiming that hostile work environments exist in the Rockstar San Diego development studio, akin to the work environment claimed by the EA Wives blog. “Rockstar Wives” are claiming 12-hour / 6 day work weeks, not allowing time off for doctor appointments, and that corporate intimidation tactics were levied against those requesting time off. There are also claims of annual salary pay increases being under the inflation rate. According to the ShackNews article Rockstar San Diego code staff is split between two projects. One group is working on an an unannounced game, and another group is hard at work trying to get Read Dead Revolver out by the April 27th street date.

GHR Review: Bayonetta
January 11th, 2010By: ShoNuff71

Craftmanship. Its a word that 99.9% of the general public would never associate with a videogame. However, sometimes for a person like me, you come accross that ultra rare gem that meets that definition. In the world of brawlers, Ninja Gaiden stands out in a classroom of one, until now. The new star pupil is Bayonetta. It is without a doubt, the second best brawler I have ever played–but for different reasons than my fanatical fanboyism love for Ninja Gaiden.

Koei Bringing Fist of the North Star to PS3 and Xbox360
December 30th, 2009By: ShoNuff71

Hokuto no ken was my gateway drug into anime. In the US it was called Fist of the North Star, and to me, its a classic. In short, nuclear war has devestated the earth, and the survivors are just trying to get by. Main hero and all around bad-ass Kenshiro has sworn to protect the weak. He’s a master of a fighting style called Hokuto Shinken (Divine Fist of North Star). In short, if he hits you in combat, you explode.
Now, Koei–the company that has given us an almost infinite number of Dynasty Warriors / Gundam / and Devil Kings action games has secured the license to bring Fist to a PS3 and 360 near you. The project is Hokotu Musou and gameplay of early code looks promising. NeoGAF has images posted in a thread on the game.
I couldn’t find any info on a release date, but I’m excited for this one. If Koei can do the license justice, this could be the game this Manga / Anime series has long deserved, but never got. Here’s the YouTube link for trailer and gameplay:

Demo Impressions: Dante’s Inferno
December 16th, 2009By: ShoNuff71

2010 is shaping up to be a super year for gaming, especially in the genres I’m interested in playing–namely fighters and brawlers. Games like Bayonetta, Darksiders, and God of War 3 will be giving my brawlers’ itch a major league scratch. Personally, I can’t wait.
Now comes the demo for EA’s Dante’s Inferno, one of the brawlers I was looking forward to early next year. After playing the demo however, I do have some concerns….
Demo Impressions: Bayonetta
December 2nd, 2009By: ShoNuff71

With the current gen of game consoles, there has been a lot of hub-bub about demos. Some developers make the extra effort to put a sample of their project in gamers’ hands, while others would rather rely on pedigree from previous efforts, or the supposed legendary status of a given project’s lead developer, and skip the demo. Last week I had the opportunity to try out a demo for a game that has plenty of pedigree from the coders behind it. The game is Bayonetta, and it has the potential to raise the brawler genre quality bar to stratuspheric levels.
Sony Offering HDTV Bravia and Playstation3 Bundles
December 2nd, 2009By: ShoNuff71

As the Christmas shopping season moves into full swing, here’s a deal that some of you might find interesting. If you are interested in getting an HD television and a Playstation 3 for Christmas, Sonystyle.com may be able to help.
They are offering their LCD and LED TVs with a 120gig Playstation3 Slim. There are too many variants to list here for this article, but prices range from around $1,300 to about $2,250 for a 52″ LED 1080p Bravia. Not bad for a high end set and a Playstation3. Check out Sonystyle.com for all the details.
Cody, Guy, & Adon Added to Super StreetFighter IV Roster
November 28th, 2009By: ShoNuff71

The guys at Capcom continue to have fighting freaks like me salivating, with the latest info released from Capcom Japan’s blog, and reported on by fighting game site iplaywinner.com. Announced are three additional fighters to the SSFIV roster: Adon, Guy, and Cody.
Posted up are some screenshots that you simply need to check out. In my opinion, Adon, Cody and Guy never looked better with this new art style. While no specifics are discussed with regard to moves, Adon is shown drilling Sagat’s grille his super, Guy is blocking a kunai knife with his saving attack (possibly a Guy specific counter to projectiles?), and Cody is introducing Chun Li to the painful end of a wrench.
Interestingly enough, to my knowledge, the only character from previous StreetFighter games that threw kunais is Ibuki from Street Fighter III. Hopefuplly this is a visual cue as to near future roster additions–hopefully to include my favorite StreetFighter character, Dudley. Time will tell.
One thing that that I’m personally happy to read in the translation from the Japanese blog post, is the apparent massive attention to detail the coders are giving character balance. While the final result won’t be in until the game releases, it looks as if Capcom wants to make this game everything purists could possibly want. It is the hardcore that put StreetFighter on the map and as long as they remember that and keep that the prime focus, this game will be fantastic. Just from these early pics, and the online updates alone, they’ve got my money.
New Modes for Super StreetFighter IV Announced
November 21st, 2009By: ShoNuff71

Some very cool information coming from Capcom of Japan by way of iplaywinner.com is showcasing new modes coming to Super StreetFighter IV. Here is what’s showcased in the video:
Endless Mode: Also known as Quarter Mode. It’s old-school arcade action, where up to 8 players duke it out where the winner continues until defeated. While waiting your turn, you can spectate the fight, and chat.
Team Battle Mode: Up to 8 players can split into two teams (Red v Blue). Teams can be either selected by the game randomly from those in the lobby, or players can set their teams up the way they want to. You can also send team invites to your friends list, and–so your not just sitting in a lobby waiting for your buds to show up, you can play Endless Mode until the lobby fills. Teams don’t have to even either, you can go 1 vs 7, 2 vs 6, ect. Just like with Endless Mode, players can spectate the fight and chat while waiting their turn.
Replay Channel: This feature sounds like ESPN Sports Center for StreetFighter. Several different channels, including a custom play list you can fill out yourself allow you the ability to see how the best in the world get down. Search specifics will allow you to narrow things down to just the replays you want to see.
Revamped Tournament Mode: Basically this lets you host tournaments with up to 9 players (including the host). The mode boasts replay recording from spectators, a visual win/loss results bracket, and the ability for the tournament host to award titles to the winners. As with the previous modes, you can voice chat with all participants.
Bonus Stages: Beat up a Lexus and empty whiskey barrels just like the good ‘ol days. Looks real cool.
Combine this with the additional characters coming to the already well rounded SFIV roster, (please Capcom–give me Dudley and Adon) you have a D1C purchase for me. I hope they have a bundle with the Mad Catz Tournament Stick. I need another one for PS3.
