In the battle of the rhythm games – aka Rock Band v. Guitar Hero aka Harmonix v. Red Octane aka EA v. Activision, one side has arguably scored the greatest coup of them all by signing The Beatles to a digital licensing deal.
That’s right, E! Online and The WSJ (may need subscription) are reporting that The Fab Four (or their living relatives) have all signed off on the project.
“It’s cool,” Yoko Ono is reported to have said.
What makes this deal HUGE is the fact that no other digital download distribution service (iTunes, Amazon.com) has been allowed to sell Beatles tunes up to this point. From the WSJ – “The fact that a video game publisher beat iTunes and its rivals to the punch highlights the growing importance of music-oriented game titles.”
Big news. Now they just need Ed Sullivan.
